I'm making a tiny stand. I encourage you all to decide for yourself if you want to do the same. I make my tiny stand so you know someone else is too.
The recent news about Ryse, and the furore over our own 36 hour marathon has kept this at the forefront of my mind, and when GTAV came out, I felt that I couldn't bring myself to buy it. I've been waiting for this game, and I really do want to play it. I love RockstarGames games, and I enjoyed working for them, but at a cost to my family that I didn't see at the time. Maybe a bit of Stockholm syndrome, maybe a bit of pride, but definitely not right. I make my tiny stand for my wife and children.
So, before I go buying a game, from now on, unless it's an Indie title, I'm going to have a look at the quality of life at the studio before I part with my cash. Call it voting with my wallet for a better life for all those like me. I make my tiny stand and give my money to someone who didn't cause a breakdown.
The colleague asked: why bother, you can borrow my copy?
If I do that, then that's as good as me pirating the game, that's not the point. I need to point out that we shouldn't play the game, not just not buy it. Any boycott should punish the person boycotting too, otherwise it's not a message that carries any weight. I make my tiny stand, and stand by it.
Other games I am not going to play, or ever play again:
Uncharted 3 - Naughty Dog announced : “We absolutely killed ourselves on this project. I think this was the hardest thing any of us have ever done.”
Pretty much anything by E.A. / RockstarGames.
I currently feel safe to play:
Anything recently made by Insomniac
Magic the Gathering Online and the up and coming Carmageddon by StainlessGames
Dishonored - Have it that they only did 2 months over 3 years, only 12 hour days 4 days a week.
